3rd Read

Terms of Use

The rules for using 3rd Read. Plain language where we can manage it, legal language where we have to.

Effective April 29, 2026.

1. Acceptance

By accessing or using 3rd Read (the “Site”), you agree to these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, do not use the Site.

2. Permitted use

The Site is provided for personal, non-commercial reading and analysis. You may view pages, take screenshots for personal reference, and quote short excerpts for commentary, criticism, or news reporting with attribution to 3rd Read.

3. Prohibited use — automated access and scraping

Without prior written permission from the operator of 3rd Read, you may not:

  • Use any automated system, including but not limited to robots, spiders, crawlers, scrapers, headless browsers, AI agents, or offline readers, to access, index, or download any portion of the Site or its underlying data;
  • Bulk-download, harvest, copy, mirror, cache (beyond what your browser does to render a page), or otherwise systematically extract pages, data, JSON payloads, API responses, or other content from the Site;
  • Circumvent, disable, or interfere with rate limits, access controls, authentication, robots.txt directives, or any technical measure intended to prevent or restrict access;
  • Use the Site or its data to train, fine-tune, evaluate, or otherwise develop machine-learning or generative models;
  • Republish, redistribute, sell, sublicense, or build a derivative data product from any non-trivial portion of the Site's content, including computed metrics, leaderboards, projections, and writeups;
  • Use the Site for any commercial purpose, including but not limited to gambling operations, betting markets, fantasy platforms, or paid analytics products, without a separate written license.

Requests for licensed bulk access, including for academic research, may be sent to the email listed on the Glossary page. We answer quickly and we are not unreasonable; the bar is that we know who you are and what you are using the data for.

4. Intellectual property

All original content on the Site — including computed metrics, model outputs, writeups, charts, code, and visual design — is owned by the operator of 3rd Read and protected by copyright and related rights. The underlying NHL play-by-play, shift, and boxscore data is sourced from the NHL's public APIs and remains the property of its respective owners; the metrics and analysis built on top of that data are ours.

5. No warranty

The Site and everything on it is provided “as is.” We try to be careful and we publish our methods, but we make no warranty of accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. Do not bet money on these numbers.

6. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the operator of 3rd Read is not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages arising out of or related to your use of the Site, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.

7. Enforcement

We reserve the right to block IP addresses, revoke API access, and pursue available legal remedies — including under applicable computer-fraud and copyright statutes — against any person or entity that violates these Terms. Continued automated access after a block is itself a violation.

8. Changes

We may update these Terms. The effective date at the top of the page reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be noted in the site's changelog.

9. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the state in which the operator of 3rd Read resides, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles.

10. Contact

Questions about these Terms — including licensing requests for automated or commercial access — should be directed to the email listed on the Glossary page.
